Canon Rebel T1i/500D is my first DSLR. It took about three weeks to research before taking the final step. If you’re like me, you probably read about a hundred reviews from many websites. So, I’m going to try to make it as simple as possible. If you are in the market for a great entry level DSLR, and you do not have a budget that is equal to the GDP of a small country, then you are probably looking at Canon XSi, some Nikons, and this one.
Why you should choose the Rebel T1i/500D not Rebel Xsi or Nikon:
1. The screen is much better. There are 920,000 points on the 3 inches screen. Your images look awesome even before you load them on your computer. This is better than both the XSi or the Nikon 5000 because both have 230,000 points. It may not seem that makes a difference, but it is like a new plasma HDTV compared to a CRT TV of the 90s. There is a difference and I do not want to go back.
2. Movies! It is really possible to record high quality movies with the T1i, but it is not possible with the XSi. The Nikon has movie capabilities, but it only stops at 1280 x 720 (24 fps). The T1i have 1920 x 1080 (1080p, 16:9) @ 20 fps (which is probably way bigger than you need). There have been some complaints for the microphone and the environmental noise to be caught in the ability to record video, but I also had the same problem when making movies with my movie capable point and shoot. If you want to make a total length of film, you probably need a camcorder. But this is more able to catch things you happen to such as waterfalls, grandchildren playing, or sleeping puppies. I found the movie capabilities convenient (it is not hidden in some menu screen – there are the dedicated buttons for it) and you can take pictures even in the middle of recording a movie, if you see a terrific blow in the middle of filming.
3. HDMI output. I did not think that this would be a great selling point, but it is good enough to connect the camera to your HDTV and watch a great version of your pictures and video. HDMI makes a big difference in showing every hair on your dogs face, and each leaf of a landscape. It could also be quite impressive if you have to show a presentation at a party, so the HDMI cable is not included, but is relatively inexpensive. There is a included cable that connects on television, if you do not need the HD capability.
4. Finally, and this is quite my personal preference, but if this is your first DSLR you are buying into a whole family of products, when choosing a brand. I was dead set against the whole idea of bringing all the lenses, accessories, and bodies around. But ultimately, I hit a wall with my “prosumer” point and shoot, and needed to get to that step. There is a satisfactory “snappiness” for the number of rebels series, and t1i is incredibly well built camera that will last a long time. It feels incredible in your hands. This is the lightest of the three cameras above, and is a technology that should stretch pretty far, considering that it was announced only a few months ago.
It’s worth the extra hundred dollars to get the T1i vs XSI, since this is the latest model in the series and contains many rebels improvements (movie mode, better screen, and the apparent 15.1mp vs 12.1 and 12.3).
